New Marketo feature: AI agents in smart campaigns

Marketo's new AI agents, Claude Duet, LinkedIn's measurement push, Meta's per-creative audiences, and Google's control checklist.

Hey there, Digital Marketing Rockstars! 🎸

Manmeet here, this week is about handing work to machines without handing over your judgment. Marketo wants agents inside your smart campaigns. Anthropic wants one in your inbox. Meta just gave a targeting lever back, and LinkedIn and Google are both nudging you to check what your systems are actually doing.

The common thread? Automation is only as good as the rules you give it. So let's look at the rules.

In today's email:

1. Marketo's Callable Agents, and the field definitions they'll need first. πŸ“ˆ
2. Claude Duet, and what you should (and shouldn't) let an agent touch. πŸ€–
3. LinkedIn's case for measuring past the lead form.πŸ’‘
4. Meta lets each ad creative pick its own age and gender. πŸ‘€
5. Google's one-page checklist for what your site shares with Search. 🌐

Marketo Is Putting AI Agents Inside Your Smart Campaigns

Marketo's November release adds Callable Agents: AI agents that run as a flow step in a smart campaign and act on a lead record based on instructions you write in plain language. Think normalizing a lead's data or flagging likely bots, with the result written back to fields on the lead. The same release adds a Plan Campaigns skill that turns a campaign brief into a full program setup document. Both are marked "coming soon," with the release starting November 6.

Our Hot Take:
Here's the part nobody will put on a slide. An agent that writes to your lead fields is only as smart as the field it's writing to. If "Job Level" means three different things to three different teams, the agent won't fix that. It'll just get it wrong faster, and at scale. Treat Callable Agents like a new hire who reads instructions perfectly and has zero context. They'll do exactly what you wrote, so what you wrote had better be right. We've seen what clean data does: one client cut a 170K database down to 120K real contacts and ended up with a 73% open rate and 59 meetings a month. Agents can help you get there, but only if the definitions come first. Before November 6, pick the one field you'd most like an agent to clean up, write down what a correct value looks like, and get sales to agree with it.

Claude Duet Joins the "Agent That Messages You First" Club

On October 21, Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet, a proactive agent built to work like a chief of staff. It watches your connected apps, sends a short morning brief on what matters, and works on tasks in the background. It asks before anything important, like sending a message or making a payment. Access is by waitlist for US Claude Pro and Max subscribers, and Anthropic admits it can still misjudge what's urgent.

Our Hot Take:
Every major lab now has one of these. OpenAI has Dots, Meta has Muse, and now Anthropic has Duet. The question for marketers isn't which one wins. It's what you'd actually let one touch. My answer: start with the boring stuff. Follow-ups that slip, the weekly report nobody wants to build, the inbox triage at 7am. Keep anything with your name and a customer's name in the same sentence firmly human for now. An agent that drafts the follow-up is a gift. An agent that sends it to the wrong person on a Friday is a very long Monday. This week, write a two-column list: jobs you'd hand to an agent tomorrow, and jobs that stay with a person. You'll want that list long before you get off the waitlist.

LinkedIn Wants You to Stop Measuring at the Lead Form

LinkedIn published a new guide to B2B conversion tracking on October 22, with a step-by-step breakdown of how to gauge campaign performance. It builds on LinkedIn's argument from earlier this month that buyers now use AI tools to shortlist vendors, so tracking only at lead capture misses most of the decision. LinkedIn's Conversions API also now accepts hashed IP addresses and names, plus a 180-day conversion lookback for eligible categories like leads.

Our Hot Take:
Most B2B teams judge LinkedIn on form fills, then wonder why it looks expensive. That's like judging a trade show by how many business cards came home in your pocket. The deal usually closes months later, through a channel that gets all the credit. The 180-day lookback matters here, because a lot of B2B cycles don't fit inside 30 days. But none of it helps if the plumbing is half done. A surprising number of accounts still run the Insight Tag alone, or run the Conversions API without deduplication, which quietly double counts. This week, check two things in Campaign Manager: that both the Insight Tag and the Conversions API are live, and that they're sending a matching event ID. Fix that before you touch the budget.

Meta Lets Each Ad Creative Pick Its Own Audience

Meta launched "Choose an audience for each ad creative" on October 19. You can now run several ads in one ad set and give each image or video its own age range and gender. There are conditions: the ad set has to stay broad (all genders, a minimum age of 18 to 25, a maximum of 65), and it can't be combined with Advantage+ audience.

Our Hot Take:
For years Meta has been taking targeting levers away. This is one coming back, sort of. Meta's own tooltip says the media may still reach other people, so treat the setting as a strong hint to the algorithm, not a fence. The real win is structural. Plenty of accounts run two or three near-identical ad sets that exist only to send different creative to different age groups. That splits your budget and your learning. Per-creative audiences let you fold those back into one. Don't flip it on everywhere, though. It switches off Advantage+ audience, and that's a trade worth testing, not assuming. This week, pick one pair of ad sets you split by age or gender, merge them into a single broad ad set with per-creative audiences, and run it head to head for two weeks.

Google Puts Every "Keep This Out of Search" Control on One Page

On October 21, Google updated its "Control what you share with Google Search" help document. It now includes existing options such as the robots meta tag, data-nosnippet, X-Robots-Tag, and the Search generative AI control, with new sections for each. Nothing here is a new feature. Google says the update keeps the page current with the options site owners already have.

Our Hot Take:
A boring documentation update, and that's exactly why it's useful. For the first time, every lever over what Google shows from your site sits on one page, from old-school snippet controls to the AI Overviews toggle. Most sites have a mix of these set by different people over different years, and nobody remembers why. A noindex left over from a staging launch. A nosnippet a developer added to fix one page in 2022. That's how traffic disappears without a single ranking change. Treat this page as a checklist, not reading material. This week, spend fifteen minutes going through it against your own site and write down which controls you use, where, and who decided. Anything without an owner gets a second look.

Tip of the Week

Pick one rule your systems follow that nobody on the team can explain. It might be a Marketo field value, a LinkedIn conversion setting, or a robots tag on an old page. Find out who set it and why, then keep it or kill it on purpose. One rule you understand beats ten you inherited.πŸ’‘

Summary:

Here is the quick recap.

  • Marketing Automation: Marketo's Callable Agents arrive from November 6. Define your fields before an agent starts writing to them. πŸ“ˆ

  • Content: Claude Duet joins Dots and Muse. Decide which jobs an agent gets and which stay human before you need the answer. πŸ€–

  • Social: LinkedIn wants you to measure past the form fill. Make sure the Insight Tag and Conversions API are both live and deduplicated. πŸ’‘

  • PPC: Meta now lets each creative carry its own age and gender. Merge one split ad set and test it properly. πŸ‘€

  • SEO: Google's control doc is now a single checklist. Audit which controls your site uses and who owns each one. 🌐
